I write this article from the perspective of someone who grew up without cable TV. We had 3 major networks and PBS stations in more a local UHF few. At the end of 1970, we finally got cable in our street, it goes without saying that it was a big deal. This will allowed to see the new HBO, ESPN and CNN. The next step was being able to record and watch movies made before I went and bought a VCR in 1980. I practically need a forklift to get to my car because its size and that was only a 2 head model over the remote is not wireless, which was connected by a cable. This been at the top of the line RCA recorder at the time and costs $ 800.
I waited 20 years for my next step on the ladder technology and possibly a DVD player to record TV programs. The recording aspect of these machines will never be equal to my expectations because of hardware problems, bad drive (which stops recording at the center of sample) or simply use the normal difficulty. I've never been happy with DVD recorders.
Because of dissatisfaction with the recorder DVD, finally went online and bought a cheap used TiVo DVR. This proved to be my best buy for entertainment 1980.

Another great feature is the guide to list all the shows that have already saved. I not know about you but I accumulate so much tape over 25 years. I practically need a storage shed for them. With the help of the list just scroll down and choose what they want to see. It's clean and simple. No more ribbons scattered throughout the house, half of which were mislabeled, old, or simply unnecessary.
If you have a favorite actor, musician, sports equipment, or almost anything with a name that can TIVO remember. Let's say your a big fan of Harrison Ford and miss all the films to be screened in the future. Simply write your name in the TiVo to record your favorites and anything with Harrison Ford in forever, or until you remove it from your list of favorites.
The number of shows which can contain varies with the size of the hard drive of your TiVo digital recorder. I have a small place and I am still capable of storing 100 hours. To me, it enough. Some prefer more and not much to improve or simply earn most of your initial purchase.
There are more features TiVo DVR to a bargain for your entertainment dollar, but I have no time or space to enter yet. Its main advantage is that no waste hours in front of a TV to watch something that has little interest in.. You have to go on their first purchase, try a hand that can be found online.
