question i want to buy a surround sound home theater system?

If I buy the system with speakers and DVD player has surround sound only come in when I see a piece of DVD or cable do so is if there is a special way to hook up thanks

It depends on what the system you are buying, but most allow you to connect to different sources to the receiver. Note that not all sources (TV, cable, DVD, CD, VHS) are capable surround sound. When you look at the look of the rear receiver audio input, this will let you know how the components that can connect to it.
