What is the meaning of digital audio inputs?

I just purchased a Panasonic SC-HT740 (home theater in a box). I have not opened yet. I read a comment and said he has no digital audio inputs. What are the consequences. I'm trying to connect to my HDTV.

No digital input, you can connect your digital TV with this entity. Or if you use an HD set-top box, you can not connect its digital output to this box. The AVR has analog inputs audio, so you can still connect the analog output (if available) of the TV, but you will not be able to hear multichannel audio TV stations that offer high definition. Not a bad system, but if you can pay the same price or a little more and get a system with at least one entry, worthwhile. (Be sure to match the digital output of your TV – coaxial or optical) If after buying a separate DVD player, you can still use the AVR functionality.
