What is the best way to fill the space above a fireplace that was made for 34 "tube TV?

My living room has a space was built in above the fireplace that is perfect to celebrate our 34 years "of television. We recently got a 50" plasma and I mounted on the wall in the same place. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how best to fill this space? Studs? Plaster? I have to strong enough to hold the mounting bracket and television.

Put all the hardware already in the hole and fix the new TV on top of the hole.
